In the first weeks of life, the baby's digestive system is not sufficiently developed and does not produce sufficient amounts of the lactase enzyme. Milk sugar lactose without lactase cannot be broken down into simpler sugars that are easily resorbed and causes bloating, pain and colic in the stomach along with intense crying of the baby. They most often occur in the late afternoon and evening, but they can also last during the day. They usually stop around the fourth month of life. Colief drops for babies contain the enzyme lactase as a treatment for temporary lactose intolerance, added to baby milk (breast milk or formula), they break down lactose, reduce bloating and relieve colic and pain in babies. Colief drops break down lactase into simpler sugars (glucose and galactose) before the baby's feeding is finished, thus preventing colic. Four drops of Colief break down 7% of lactase in 1 ml of milk.
