D-mannose is an epimer of glucose, a type of natural sugar that binds to the surface receptors of Escherichia coli bacteria, thus preventing their binding to the bladder wall. Thanks to this, bacteria can be expelled from the urinary tract through urine, and this process is accelerated by the intake of a larger amount of fluid.
