A mercury-free clinical thermometer is a glass-protected liquid metal thermometer consisting of a liquid temperature sensor, a glass tube (called a capillary), a temperature scale, and a glass shell. The liquid temperature sensor is a gallium-based alloy (gallium, indium, and tin) contained in a glass tube. The device works on the principle of thermal expansion of substances.
